Scans Available During Your Pregnancy

From the first weeks through to the later stages, we offer appointments for different purposes. The summaries below introduce each service, with full timings and package details available through the links.

Early Pregnancy Scans

An early scan can help locate the pregnancy, look for a heartbeat and establish the number of embryos. The findings depend on how far the pregnancy has progressed. Abdominal and transvaginal scans are available at different stages, so check the appointment type before booking.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide for abdominal scan information and preparation.

Reassurance Scans

For an additional opportunity to see your baby between routine maternity appointments, a reassurance scan includes a heartbeat check and measurements appropriate to your pregnancy stage.

Our Reassurance Scan page explains the appointment window and what is included.

Gender Scans

Gender appointments are available from 16 weeks for parents who would like to find out their baby’s sex. Alongside the checks listed in the package, you will receive a selection of 2D images by email. Identification relies on obtaining a suitable view and cannot be guaranteed.

Explore the Gender Scan service for booking details.

HD Live Gender Scans

This appointment combines an attempt to identify your baby’s sex with HD Live imaging. It offers the opportunity to see more detail of your baby’s appearance, depending on their position, your pregnancy stage and the views available.

See the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Growth Scans

A growth appointment takes ultrasound measurements to estimate your baby’s size and weight later in pregnancy. It also includes checks of the heartbeat and amniotic fluid, providing information about your baby at the time of the scan.

Find out what to expect from a Growth Scan.

3D, 4D and HD Live Baby Scans

Watching your baby move or seeing their features can be a memorable part of pregnancy. Our imaging packages offer still 3D pictures and, with selected options, moving images and short video clips. The pictures achievable depend on your baby’s position and scanning conditions.

Browse the 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package to compare what each includes.

Presentation Scans

In the later weeks, a presentation scan identifies how your baby is lying, such as head down, breech or sideways. The scan records their position on the day, and your maternity team can advise on what this means for your care.

Check the Presentation Scan page for appointment details.

Pregnancy Blood Tests at Glasgow City Centre

Families travelling from Bishopbriggs can also book selected pregnancy blood tests at our Glasgow City Centre clinic. These appointments take place at a different location from the Bearsden scan services above.

The Early Gender Blood Test is available from seven weeks and uses a maternal blood sample to identify your baby’s sex.

NIPT Screening is available from ten weeks and assesses the chance of selected chromosomal conditions. NIPT provides a screening result, rather than a diagnosis.

Visit the individual test pages for eligibility, results information and booking instructions.

Private scans complement your routine maternity care. Continue attending your NHS appointments and contact your maternity team if you have symptoms or concerns.
