Explore the Scan Options

Different appointments answer different questions, from what can be seen in early pregnancy to your baby’s position closer to birth. The appropriate choice depends on your pregnancy stage and the purpose of your visit.

Early Pregnancy Scans

An early appointment can help establish the location of the pregnancy, look for a heartbeat and identify whether there is more than one embryo. Findings depend on how far the pregnancy has progressed. Abdominal and transvaginal appointments have different booking windows.

For abdominal scan timings and preparation, see our Early Pregnancy Scan guide.

Reassurance Between Scheduled Scans

A reassurance appointment offers an additional opportunity to see your baby between routine maternity appointments. It includes checking the heartbeat and taking measurements appropriate to your stage of pregnancy.

Check the Reassurance Scan page for availability by gestation and the appointment inclusions.

Gender Scan Appointments

From 16 weeks, you can book an appointment to try to find out your baby’s sex. The package also includes the listed wellbeing checks and 2D images sent by email. Identification depends on your baby’s position and the views obtained, so it cannot be guaranteed.

Read more about our Gender Scan service.

HD Live Gender Imaging

For those interested in HD Live images during a gender appointment, this package offers an additional way to see your baby’s features. The results achievable vary with gestation, position and scanning conditions.

Visit the HD Live Gender Scan page to check when this option is available and what you will receive.

Growth Measurements

A growth scan records measurements used to estimate your baby’s size and weight later in pregnancy. Heartbeat and amniotic fluid checks are also included, providing information about your baby at that appointment.

Find the full details in our Growth Scan guide.

Choosing a 3D or 4D Experience

If photographs or moving images are your main reason for booking, compare our imaging packages. A 3D scan captures still pictures, while 4D shows movement in real time. Your baby’s position affects which features can be seen clearly.

The 3D Scan Picture Package focuses on still images. For packages including moving images, explore the 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Position Checks Towards the End of Pregnancy

A presentation scan identifies how your baby is lying at the time of the appointment, such as head down, breech or sideways. Share the findings with your maternity team, who can explain what they mean for your ongoing care.

See our Presentation Scan page for booking information.

Blood Test Appointments at Glasgow City Centre

Families from Dumbarton can also access selected pregnancy blood tests at our Glasgow City Centre clinic. These services require a separate booking at that location.

Our Early Gender Blood Test is available from seven weeks for those wishing to find out their baby’s sex through a blood sample.

NIPT Screening is available from ten weeks and estimates the chance of selected chromosomal conditions. It is a screening test and does not provide a diagnosis.

Follow the service links to review eligibility, results information and appointment details before booking.

Private scans support, rather than replace, your routine maternity care. Keep your scheduled NHS appointments and contact your maternity team if you have symptoms or concerns.
