Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

You may be booking an early scan, hoping to find out your baby’s sex or planning a later appointment to capture images and movements. Each option has its own recommended pregnancy stage and inclusions. Our individual scan guides explain these in full.

Early Pregnancy Appointments

An early scan can help identify the location of a pregnancy, look for a heartbeat and establish whether there is more than one embryo. The findings depend on how far along the pregnancy is, and an appointment may involve abdominal or transvaginal scanning.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments

A reassurance appointment provides an opportunity to see your baby and check their heartbeat and measurements appropriate to your pregnancy stage. It complements your scheduled maternity care.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex

Gender scan appointments are available from 16 weeks and include a wellbeing check and 2D images sent by email. Your sonographer will try to identify your baby’s sex, although this depends on the views available and cannot be guaranteed.

Explore our Gender Scan appointments.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment

An HD Live gender appointment combines an attempt to identify your baby’s sex with the opportunity to capture images showing more detail of their appearance. Your baby’s position and stage of pregnancy will influence the images achievable.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Measurements Later in Pregnancy

A growth appointment uses ultrasound measurements to estimate your baby’s size and weight, alongside checks of the heartbeat and amniotic fluid. These findings provide information about your baby at the time of your visit.

Find out more about our Growth Scan service.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D

For families interested in images and keepsakes, our 3D, 4D and HD Live packages offer different ways to see your baby before birth. Depending on the package, you may receive still pictures, short video clips or both. Clear views of the face and movements depend on your baby’s position and the scanning conditions.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Checking Your Baby’s Position

A presentation appointment checks whether your baby is head down, bottom down or lying sideways towards the end of pregnancy. It records their position at that time, and your maternity team can advise on any implications for your care.

Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.

Pregnancy Blood Tests at Glasgow South and City

If you are travelling from East Kilbride for a pregnancy blood test, our Glasgow South and Glasgow City clinics offer an Early Gender Blood Test from seven weeks and NIPT Screening from ten weeks.

The early gender test is used to identify your baby’s sex. NIPT assesses the chance of selected chromosomal conditions and is a screening test, not a diagnosis. Visit the relevant service page for eligibility, results information and booking details, and check the clinic location when arranging your appointment.

Private scans are additional to routine maternity care. Continue attending your NHS appointments and contact your maternity team if you have symptoms or concerns.
