Our Edinburgh clinic uses the GE Voluson S8, a 2022 ultrasound system designed to support a range of private pregnancy scans. Alongside standard 2D imaging, the system includes additional imaging functions that can be used depending on the type of scan and stage of pregnancy.

Our sonographers adjust the equipment and settings throughout each appointment to suit the examination and the views available. As the clinic operates five days a week, the system is used across a wide range of pregnancy scans.

Ultrasound images can vary from one appointment to another. Your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and movement, and the viewing angle can all affect what can be seen. Our sonographers will make appropriate adjustments during your scan to help achieve clear images where possible.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

Our Edinburgh clinic provides a selection of private pregnancy scans, from early and reassurance appointments to gender scans and enhanced 3D, 4D and HD Live imaging.

Each scan is suitable for different stages of pregnancy and includes specific checks or features. Browse the options below to find out when each appointment can be booked and what’s included.

Early Pregnancy Scans

An early pregnancy scan allows you to see your developing pregnancy and provides some initial information about what can be seen at the time of your appointment. Where visibility allows, your sonographer may check the location of the pregnancy, look for cardiac activity and see whether more than one embryo is present.

The method used will depend on how far along you are and which approach is most appropriate. Earlier scans may be carried out transvaginally, while an abdominal scan may be suitable as the pregnancy develops.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

Reassurance Scan

A reassurance scan offers an additional look at your baby between routine maternity appointments. Your sonographer will carry out checks suited to your stage of pregnancy, which may include checking cardiac activity and taking measurements.

This appointment complements your NHS maternity care rather than replacing it.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Gender Scan

Available from 16 weeks, this scan lets you see your baby and find out their sex. Your sonographer will carry out checks appropriate to your stage of pregnancy and attempt to obtain a clear view for identification.

Digital 2D images are provided after your appointment. Your baby’s position and movement can affect visibility, so sex identification cannot be guaranteed.

Explore our Gender Scan appointments.

HD Live Gender Scan

Combine gender identification with enhanced images of your baby using HD Live ultrasound. This scan offers a more detailed view of their developing features while your sonographer attempts to identify their sex.

The images available will depend on factors such as your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and movement.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Growth Scan

Later in pregnancy, a growth scan looks at your baby’s size and development. Your sonographer will take measurements to estimate their weight and may also check their heartbeat and amniotic fluid levels.

The results provide a snapshot of your baby’s growth and wellbeing at the time of the appointment.

Find out more about our Growth Scan service.

3D, 4D and HD Live Scans

Our enhanced imaging scans offer different ways to see your baby before birth. 3D ultrasound creates detailed still images, while 4D and HD Live can capture movement and developing features in real time.

Your appointment may include photographs, video clips or both, depending on the scan selected. The views available can vary with your baby’s position, movement and stage of pregnancy.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Presentation Scan

A presentation scan is carried out later in pregnancy to establish your baby’s position in the womb. Your sonographer will check whether they are head down, bottom down or lying across the womb.

The appointment gives you a record of your baby’s position at that point in pregnancy, which can be shared with your midwife or maternity team as part of your ongoing care.
