At our Aberdeen clinic, we use the GE Voluson S8 ultrasound system, a 2022 model selected to provide our sonographers with detailed imaging capabilities across our private pregnancy appointments.
The technology behind an ultrasound can influence the quality and clarity of the images obtained during a scan. As our Aberdeen clinic operates five days a week and welcomes a large number of patients, we use equipment that is suited to regular scanning and supports our team throughout a busy schedule of appointments.
The GE Voluson S8 combines high-resolution imaging with a range of ultrasound functions, giving our sonographers the tools they need to obtain clear views during each appointment. Its imaging capabilities can be used across different scan types and stages of pregnancy, helping our team deliver consistent imaging throughout your visit.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan
Our range of private pregnancy scans are available at different points throughout your pregnancy, depending on what you would like to see or check. Appointments include early pregnancy and reassurance scans, gender scans and more detailed 3D, 4D and HD Live imaging later in pregnancy. Each scan has its own recommended timeframe and inclusions, with individual guides providing more information about the appointment and what you can expect on the day.
Early Pregnancy Appointments
An early pregnancy scan can provide an early assessment of your pregnancy, including where it is located, whether a heartbeat can be seen and whether more than one embryo is visible. The images obtained will depend on your stage of pregnancy, and your sonographer will determine whether an abdominal or transvaginal scan is more appropriate based on how far along you are and as well as other factors.
Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.
An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments
A reassurance scan offers an opportunity to see your baby during pregnancy, with your sonographer carrying out checks appropriate to your stage of pregnancy. These may include viewing the heartbeat and taking measurements, depending on how far along you are. The appointment provides an additional check alongside the routine scans and care you receive through your maternity services.
See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.
Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex
From 16 weeks of pregnancy, a gender scan allows you to have an attempt at finding out your baby’s sex while also including a wellbeing check during the appointment. Your sonographer will assess the ultrasound views available and try to identify your baby’s sex, with 2D images sent to you by email following your scan. As your baby’s position can affect the views that can be obtained, we cannot guarantee that their sex will be identifiable.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment
A HD Live gender scan combines an attempt to identify your baby’s sex with enhanced ultrasound images showing their developing features. HD Live imaging can provide a more detailed view of your baby during the appointment, although the images obtained will depend on your stage of pregnancy and your baby’s position on the day.
View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.
Measurements Later in Pregnancy
A growth scan uses ultrasound measurements to assess your baby’s development and estimate their size and weight at the time of your appointment. Your sonographer will also check your baby’s heartbeat and assess the amniotic fluid. These measurements and checks provide an overview of your baby’s growth and wellbeing at that particular stage of pregnancy.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D
Our 3D, 4D and HD Live appointments offer the opportunity to view your baby’s developing features and movements in different ways before birth. Depending on the scan you select, your appointment may include still photographs, video clips or a combination of both for you to keep. The images and views available will depend on factors such as your baby’s position during the appointment.
Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.
Checking Your Baby’s Position
A presentation scan checks your baby’s position during the later stages of pregnancy, showing whether they are head down, bottom down or lying across the womb. The scan provides a record of their position on the day of your appointment. If you have any questions about your baby’s position or what it may mean for your care, your maternity team can provide further guidance.
Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
Went for a few scans here, the service is always very pleasant and they always try to ensure you are seen on time. My little one was born last week and everything from the gender to the average ultrasound age was bang on/HM
We had a great experience, from the moment we arrived we were welcomed, felt relaxed and had great communication with both ladies. They respected our wishes to not see our gender and we cannot wait to come back for a more detailed scan. Highly recommend.KM
Highly recommend!! Had such a lovely experience getting my gender reveal scan at baby scanning in Newton Mearns. Lots of time was taken to go through everything as they were doing my scan, it was a nice relaxed environment and I felt totally at ease.RG
