Our Edinburgh clinic uses the GE Voluson S8 ultrasound system, a 2022 model selected to support detailed imaging across our range of private pregnancy appointments.

The equipment used for an ultrasound can make a difference to the clarity and level of detail available during a scan. As our Edinburgh clinic is open five days a week and sees a high number of patients, we use an ultrasound system designed to meet the demands of a busy scanning environment while giving our sonographers access to a range of advanced imaging functions.

The GE Voluson S8 offers a combination of high-resolution imaging and specialist ultrasound features that can be used across different stages of pregnancy. This gives our sonographers the tools they need to capture clear images and detailed views during each appointment.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

From the early stages of pregnancy through to later appointments, our private ultrasound scans offer different options depending on what you would like to see or check. You can choose from early pregnancy and reassurance scans, gender appointments and enhanced 3D, 4D and HD Live imaging as your pregnancy progresses.

Each appointment has its own recommended timeframe, purpose and inclusions. Use the guides below to explore the individual scans, including what happens during your appointment, when each option is available and what you’ll receive afterwards.

Early Pregnancy Appointments

An early pregnancy scan checks the pregnancy’s location, cardiac activity and whether more than one embryo is visible. What can be seen will depend on how far along you are, and the scan may be carried out abdominally or transvaginally depending on your stage of pregnancy.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments

A reassurance scan lets you see your baby while your sonographer carries out checks appropriate to your stage of pregnancy, including the heartbeat and relevant measurements where possible. It is an additional private appointment and does not replace your routine NHS scans or maternity care.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex

From 16 weeks, our gender scan includes a wellbeing check and identification of your baby’s sex, with 2D images emailed after your appointment. Identification depends on your baby’s position, so it may not always be possible to obtain a clear view.

Explore our Gender Scan appointments.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment

Our HD Live gender scan combines an attempt to identify your baby’s sex with enhanced images of their developing features. Image quality and visibility can vary depending on your stage of pregnancy and your baby’s position during the appointment.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Measurements Later in Pregnancy

A growth scan uses ultrasound measurements to assess your baby’s size and estimate their weight. Your sonographer will also check their heartbeat and amniotic fluid, providing an overview of their growth and wellbeing at the time of your appointment.

Find out more about our Growth Scan service.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D

Our 3D, 4D and HD Live scans let you see your baby’s developing features and movements in enhanced detail. Depending on your chosen scan, you may receive photos, videos or both. The images captured can vary depending on your stage of pregnancy and your baby’s position.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Checking Your Baby’s Position

A presentation scan checks your baby’s position later in pregnancy, showing whether they are head down, bottom down or lying sideways. The scan records their position at the time of your appointment, which can be discussed with your maternity team if needed.

Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
