The GE Voluson S8 combines high-quality imaging with a range of ultrasound functions, supporting our sonographers in obtaining clear and detailed views throughout your appointment. Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan
Our range of private pregnancy scans covers key stages from the early weeks through to later pregnancy. Whether you’re looking for an early assessment, hoping to discover your baby’s sex or would like enhanced views of their developing features and movements, there are appointments available for different reasons and stages.
The scans vary in terms of when they are suitable and what is included, so explore the individual guides below for details of each appointment, including what takes place during the scan and what you can expect to receive afterwards.
Early Pregnancy Appointments
An early pregnancy scan provides an initial assessment of the pregnancy, including its location, cardiac activity and whether more than one embryo can be seen. The findings and level of detail available will depend on the stage of pregnancy at the time of your appointment. Depending on how early you are and which images are needed, your scan may be performed abdominally or transvaginally.
Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.
An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments
A reassurance scan provides an additional opportunity to see your baby during pregnancy, with your sonographer carrying out checks suited to how far along you are. Where appropriate, this may include checking the heartbeat and taking measurements. The appointment is designed to complement, rather than replace, your routine NHS care, scans and maternity appointments.
See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.
Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex
From 16 weeks, our gender scan includes a wellbeing assessment alongside an attempt to identify your baby’s sex and 2D ultrasound imaging, with your images emailed to you after the appointment. Your sonographer will assess the ultrasound picture to determine whether your baby’s sex can be identified. As your baby’s position can make the area difficult to see, there may be occasions when a clear identification isn’t possible during the scan.
Explore our Gender Scan appointments.
Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment
With our HD Live gender scan, you can combine finding out your baby’s sex with enhanced ultrasound images of their developing features. The appointment includes an attempt to determine their sex while also capturing HD Live images for you to enjoy during your scan. The appearance and clarity of the images can differ between appointments, depending on factors such as how far along you are and your baby’s position at the time.
View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.
Measurements Later in Pregnancy
A growth scan focuses on assessing your baby’s size and development at the stage of pregnancy when you attend. Your sonographer will take a series of ultrasound measurements, which can be used to calculate an estimated weight, as well as checking the heartbeat and amniotic fluid. The results provide a record of your baby’s measurements and wellbeing during the appointment.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D
Our 3D, 4D and HD Live scans offer different ways to see your baby before birth, including their developing facial features and movements. Depending on the appointment you choose, your scan may include photographs, video footage or a combination of both for you to keep and revisit. The appearance of your baby and the level of detail captured can differ between scans, as their position and your stage of pregnancy can affect the images available.
Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.
Checking Your Baby’s Position
A presentation scan is carried out in the later stages of pregnancy to establish your baby’s position within the womb. It can identify whether they are head down, bottom down or lying sideways. The scan records their presentation at the time of your appointment, giving you information that you can discuss with your maternity team as part of your ongoing care.
Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
Went for a few scans here, the service is always very pleasant and they always try to ensure you are seen on time. My little one was born last week and everything from the gender to the average ultrasound age was bang on/HM
We had a great experience, from the moment we arrived we were welcomed, felt relaxed and had great communication with both ladies. They respected our wishes to not see our gender and we cannot wait to come back for a more detailed scan. Highly recommend.KM
Highly recommend!! Had such a lovely experience getting my gender reveal scan at baby scanning in Newton Mearns. Lots of time was taken to go through everything as they were doing my scan, it was a nice relaxed environment and I felt totally at ease.RG
