Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

From early pregnancy reassurance through to gender scans and later appointments offering enhanced views of your baby’s features and movements, we provide private scans to suit different points throughout pregnancy. Each appointment is tailored to a particular stage and offers its own features and inclusions. Browse our individual scan guides to find out more about what each appointment involves, when it is recommended and which scan best matches what you’re looking for.

Early Pregnancy Appointments

An early pregnancy scan can provide information about the location of the pregnancy, cardiac activity and whether more than one embryo is present. What can be seen will vary depending on how far along you are. Depending on your stage of pregnancy and what is appropriate for your appointment, the scan may be carried out abdominally or transvaginally.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments

A reassurance scan gives you the opportunity to see your baby while checking for cardiac activity and taking measurements appropriate to your stage of pregnancy. It can provide additional reassurance between routine maternity appointments, but does not replace your NHS scans or ongoing maternity care.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Gender Scans

Available from 16 weeks of pregnancy, our gender scan includes a wellbeing check alongside 2D images, which are sent to you by email after your appointment. Your sonographer will assess the available views to try to identify your baby’s sex during the scan. As your baby’s position can affect visibility, it may not always be possible to determine their sex with certainty.

Explore our Gender Scan appointments.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment

An HD Live gender scan combines an attempt to identify your baby’s sex with enhanced imaging of their developing features. It gives you the opportunity to see your baby in greater detail, with the images captured depending on factors such as your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and the conditions during the appointment.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Assessing Your Baby’s Growth Later in Pregnancy

A growth scan uses ultrasound measurements to assess your baby’s growth and provide an estimate of their size and weight. The appointment also includes checks of their heartbeat and amniotic fluid, giving you a snapshot of their growth and wellbeing at the time of the scan.

Find out more about our Growth Scan service.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D

Our 3D, 4D and HD Live scans offer the opportunity to see your baby’s features and movements in greater detail and capture memorable images during pregnancy. Depending on the appointment you choose, you may receive still photographs, video clips or a combination of both.

The images obtained during your scan will vary depending on your individual circumstances. Factors such as your baby’s position, stage of pregnancy and the conditions at the time of the appointment can all affect the views available.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Checking Your Baby’s Position

During the later stages of pregnancy, a presentation scan can show how your baby is positioned in the womb, such as head down, bottom down or lying across the womb. The scan records your baby’s presentation at the time of your appointment, giving you information that can be discussed with or shared with your midwife or maternity team where appropriate.

Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.

Blood Tests at Our Glasgow Clinics

We’re pleased to offer two maternity blood tests at our Glasgow City Centre and Glasgow South clinics, giving you access to early information and reassurance during pregnancy.

Early Gender Blood Test – from 7 weeks

A simple maternal blood test that can identify your baby’s sex with reported accuracy of up to 99.9%. Results are provided quickly, and you can choose to add an ultrasound scan to your appointment for additional reassurance.

NIPT Screening – from 10 weeks

NIPT is a non-invasive blood test that analyses fetal DNA in your blood to screen for certain chromosomal conditions. Three screening options are available:

  • NIPT Standard – screens for Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Patau syndrome.
  • NIPT Advance – includes screening for these three trisomies, as well as sex chromosome abnormalities.
  • NIPT Absolute – our most comprehensive screening option, covering trisomies and sex chromosome abnormalities, alongside screening for up to 60 microdeletion syndromes.

All tests are carried out by experienced clinicians, with results returned securely and promptly. Ultrasound add-ons are also available if you would like to include a scan during your visit.
