Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

Our Edinburgh clinic offers private pregnancy scans at different stages, including early pregnancy, reassurance, gender, 3D, 4D and HD Live appointments. Explore the options below to find out when each scan is recommended, what’s included and what to expect.

Early Pregnancy Appointments

An early pregnancy scan looks at where the pregnancy is located, checks for cardiac activity and assesses whether more than one embryo can be seen. The type of ultrasound used will depend on how far along your pregnancy is, with the scan performed either abdominally or transvaginally.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments

A reassurance scan is an additional appointment where your baby can be viewed and your sonographer carries out checks suited to your stage of pregnancy. Where possible, this can include checking the heartbeat and taking appropriate measurements. It is intended to supplement your usual NHS scans and maternity care, not replace them.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex

From 16 weeks, this appointment is designed to check your baby’s wellbeing while also looking at the ultrasound views needed to determine their sex. 2D scan images are sent to you by email afterwards. Your baby’s position can affect visibility, so a definite identification cannot always be made.

Explore our Gender Scan appointments.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment

From 16 weeks onwards, you can have your baby’s wellbeing assessed while your sonographer looks for a clear view to identify their sex. You’ll receive 2D ultrasound images by email after your visit. As the position of your baby can affect what is visible, it may not always be possible to determine their sex.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Measurements Later in Pregnancy

A growth scan involves taking ultrasound measurements to assess your baby’s growth and calculate an estimated weight. Your sonographer will also assess the heartbeat and amniotic fluid, giving you a snapshot of your baby’s size and wellbeing at that stage of pregnancy.

Find out more about our Growth Scan service.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D

Our enhanced 3D, 4D and HD Live scans capture different views of your baby, from developing facial features to their movements. Depending on the appointment selected, you may receive photographs, video clips or both to keep. The images obtained can vary between scans, with your stage of pregnancy and your baby’s position affecting the views available.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Checking Your Baby’s Position

Towards the end of pregnancy, a presentation scan checks your baby’s lie and position, including whether they are head down, bottom down or lying sideways. The appointment records how your baby is positioned at the time of the scan, and the findings can be shared with your maternity team where appropriate.

Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
