At our Edinburgh clinic, pregnancy scans are carried out using the GE Voluson S8, a 2022 ultrasound system. It combines detailed 2D imaging with a range of additional ultrasound functions, supporting our sonographers across different types of private pregnancy appointments.
Having suitable imaging equipment is particularly important in a busy clinic. Our Edinburgh location is open five days a week and sees a high number of patients, so the GE Voluson S8 is used as part of our regular scanning service. Its range of imaging features can be selected according to the appointment and the views our sonographers are aiming to obtain.
The quality and appearance of ultrasound images can vary from one scan to another. Factors such as your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and the views available on the day can all affect what is captured. Our sonographers assess the images throughout the appointment and use the appropriate ultrasound settings and functions to obtain the clearest views possible.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan
Whether you’re looking for an early look at your pregnancy, some additional reassurance or enhanced images later on, our Edinburgh clinic has private scan options for different points in pregnancy. These include early pregnancy, reassurance and gender scans, as well as 3D, 4D and HD Live appointments.
Take a look through the available scans below to find out when each appointment can be booked, what’s included and what you can expect from the scan.
Early Pregnancy Appointments
Early in pregnancy, an ultrasound can be used to check where the pregnancy is developing, look for a heartbeat and see whether more than one embryo is visible. Depending on how far along you are, your sonographer may perform the scan over your abdomen or use a transvaginal ultrasound to obtain the appropriate views.
Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.
An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments
For those wanting an extra scan between routine appointments, a reassurance appointment offers a chance to see your baby while your sonographer carries out checks appropriate to your stage of pregnancy. Where possible, this can include viewing the heartbeat and taking measurements. The appointment is an additional service alongside your NHS maternity care and is not intended to replace your usual scans or appointments.
See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.
Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex
Available from 16 weeks, this appointment includes checks of your baby’s wellbeing alongside an attempt to identify their sex. You’ll also receive 2D ultrasound images electronically following the scan. Please bear in mind that your baby’s position can affect the visibility of the relevant area, so identification of their sex cannot be guaranteed.
Explore our Gender Scan appointments.
Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment
Find out your baby’s sex while seeing more of their developing features with enhanced HD Live ultrasound imaging. The scan is designed to capture additional detail, although the quality and views achieved can vary according to factors such as your stage of pregnancy and your baby’s position at the time.
View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.
Measurements Later in Pregnancy
Measurements taken during a growth scan are used to assess your baby’s development and calculate an estimated weight. Alongside these measurements, your sonographer checks the heartbeat and the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding your baby, creating a snapshot of their size and wellbeing at the time of the scan.
Find out more about our Growth Scan service.
Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D
Capture memorable views of your baby before birth with our range of enhanced ultrasound scans. 3D imaging creates still images, while 4D and HD Live can show your baby’s features and movements in different ways. Depending on the appointment, you may receive photographs, videos or both, with the images achieved influenced by your baby’s position.
Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.
Checking Your Baby’s Position
As your pregnancy progresses, a presentation scan identifies your baby’s position within the womb, including whether they are lying head down, bottom down or across the womb. The result gives you a record of their position on the day of your appointment, which can then be discussed with your maternity team where appropriate.
Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
Went for a few scans here, the service is always very pleasant and they always try to ensure you are seen on time. My little one was born last week and everything from the gender to the average ultrasound age was bang on/HM
We had a great experience, from the moment we arrived we were welcomed, felt relaxed and had great communication with both ladies. They respected our wishes to not see our gender and we cannot wait to come back for a more detailed scan. Highly recommend.KM
Highly recommend!! Had such a lovely experience getting my gender reveal scan at baby scanning in Newton Mearns. Lots of time was taken to go through everything as they were doing my scan, it was a nice relaxed environment and I felt totally at ease.RG
