Our Edinburgh clinic uses the GE Voluson S8 ultrasound system, a 2022 model selected to support our sonographers across a broad range of private pregnancy scans. The system combines high-resolution 2D ultrasound with additional imaging functions, giving our team flexibility when obtaining views at different stages of pregnancy.
The equipment used during an ultrasound can influence the quality, clarity and level of detail available in the images. The GE Voluson S8 is designed to provide detailed ultrasound imaging while offering a range of specialist features that can be used according to the type of appointment and the views required.
Our Edinburgh clinic operates five days a week and welcomes a high volume of patients, so dependable equipment is an important part of our everyday service. The GE Voluson S8 is built for regular use in a busy scanning environment, while giving our sonographers the imaging capabilities needed to obtain clear views and detailed images throughout your appointment.
Different factors can affect the images obtained during a pregnancy scan, including your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and the views available on the day. Our sonographers use the equipment and imaging functions appropriate to each appointment to make the most of the views available.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan
At our Edinburgh clinic, you can choose from a range of private ultrasound appointments throughout your pregnancy. Our scans include early pregnancy, reassurance, gender and enhanced 3D, 4D and HD Live imaging, with different options available as your pregnancy progresses.
Browse the scans below to see the recommended stage for each appointment, what is included and how the scan works.
Early Pregnancy Appointments
An early pregnancy scan assesses the location of the pregnancy, looks for cardiac activity and checks whether more than one embryo can be seen. The type of ultrasound used will depend on your stage of pregnancy, with the scan carried out either abdominally or transvaginally.
Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.
An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments
A reassurance scan provides an additional private check during pregnancy, with your sonographer carrying out assessments suited to how far along you are. This may include viewing the heartbeat and taking relevant measurements where possible. It is intended to sit alongside your usual NHS scans and maternity care, rather than replace them.
See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.
Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex
From 16 weeks, you can book a gender scan that combines a wellbeing assessment with an attempt to determine your baby’s sex. 2D images from the scan will be sent to you by email afterwards. As your baby’s position may limit the views available, it is not always possible to confirm their sex during the appointment.
Explore our Gender Scan appointments.
Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment
With HD Live imaging, this gender scan combines an attempt to identify your baby’s sex with enhanced views of their developing features. The images you receive can differ in clarity and detail depending on factors such as your stage of pregnancy and how your baby is positioned during the scan.
View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.
Measurements Later in Pregnancy
A growth scan assesses your baby’s size and development using ultrasound measurements, which are used to estimate their weight. The scan also includes checks of the heartbeat and amniotic fluid, giving an indication of your baby’s growth and wellbeing at that point in pregnancy.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D
Our 3D, 4D and HD Live scans offer enhanced views of your baby’s developing features and movements. Depending on the scan you choose, you may receive still photographs, video footage or a combination of both. The images captured can vary in clarity and detail according to factors such as your stage of pregnancy and your baby’s position.
Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.
Checking Your Baby’s Position
During the later stages of pregnancy, a presentation scan checks how your baby is lying in the womb, including whether they are head down, bottom down or positioned sideways. The appointment records their presentation at that time, which can be discussed with your maternity team as part of your ongoing care.
Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
Went for a few scans here, the service is always very pleasant and they always try to ensure you are seen on time. My little one was born last week and everything from the gender to the average ultrasound age was bang on/HM
We had a great experience, from the moment we arrived we were welcomed, felt relaxed and had great communication with both ladies. They respected our wishes to not see our gender and we cannot wait to come back for a more detailed scan. Highly recommend.KM
Highly recommend!! Had such a lovely experience getting my gender reveal scan at baby scanning in Newton Mearns. Lots of time was taken to go through everything as they were doing my scan, it was a nice relaxed environment and I felt totally at ease.RG
