Our Aberdeen clinic uses the GE Voluson S8 ultrasound system, a 2022 model selected to support our sonographers across our range of private pregnancy scans. The system offers a variety of imaging features, allowing our team to select the appropriate tools for different types of appointments and stages of pregnancy.

The ultrasound system used during an appointment plays a part in the quality and level of detail that can be displayed on screen. With the Aberdeen clinic operating five days a week and seeing a busy schedule of patients, we use equipment designed to provide dependable performance throughout regular scanning appointments.

The GE Voluson S8 provides high-resolution imaging alongside a range of ultrasound functions, helping our sonographers obtain clear views of your baby during your appointment. Its capabilities can be used across different scan types, from earlier pregnancy appointments through to scans later in pregnancy where more detailed imaging may be desired.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

We offer a range of private ultrasound appointments designed to suit different needs at various stages of pregnancy. You may choose an earlier scan for reassurance or book a later appointment to find out your baby’s sex or enjoy a closer look at their features and movements. Each appointment is available within a specific stage of pregnancy and includes different checks or imaging options. You can find the recommended timing and full details for each scan in the individual guides below.

Early Pregnancy Appointments

During early pregnancy, an ultrasound can provide an initial view of the pregnancy, including its location, cardiac activity and whether more than one embryo is present. What is visible will depend on how far along the pregnancy is at the time of your appointment. Depending on your stage of pregnancy and the images that can be obtained, your sonographer will advise whether an abdominal or transvaginal approach is most suitable.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments

Our reassurance scans are designed for those who would like an additional opportunity to see their baby during pregnancy. During the appointment, your sonographer can check for a heartbeat and take measurements appropriate to your stage of pregnancy. These private scans can be booked in addition to the routine care and ultrasound appointments provided as part of your maternity care.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex

From 16 weeks, our gender scan gives you the opportunity to find out your baby’s sex while also having a basic wellbeing check during the appointment. Your sonographer will assess the ultrasound images to see if your baby’s sex can be identified, taking into account their position and the views available on the day. Your 2D ultrasound images will then be sent to you by email. As your baby’s position can affect what can be seen, we cannot guarantee that their sex will be identifiable.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment

This appointment gives you the opportunity to find out your baby’s sex while also viewing their developing features using HD Live ultrasound imaging. Your sonographer will use the views available during the scan to try to identify your baby’s sex and capture enhanced images of their face and features. The images that can be obtained will depend on how far along you are and your baby’s position at the time of the appointment.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Measurements Later in Pregnancy

A growth scan uses a series of ultrasound measurements to estimate your baby’s size and weight at the time of your appointment. Alongside these measurements, your sonographer will check your baby’s heartbeat and assess the amniotic fluid. Together, these checks provide a snapshot of your baby’s growth and wellbeing during the scan.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D

Our 3D, 4D and HD Live scans offer the opportunity to see your baby’s features and movements in greater detail before birth. Depending on the appointment you choose, you may receive a combination of still images and video clips to keep after your scan. The views and level of detail captured can vary depending on your stage of pregnancy and your baby’s position during the appointment.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Checking Your Baby’s Position

A presentation scan provides a view of your baby’s position during the later stages of pregnancy, including whether they are head down, bottom down or lying across the womb. The scan records their position at the time of your appointment, as this can change as pregnancy progresses. Your maternity team should provide any further guidance or advice about your baby’s position and your ongoing care.
