For our pregnancy scans in Edinburgh, we use the GE Voluson S8, a 2022 ultrasound system that supports a range of examinations throughout pregnancy. It combines 2D ultrasound imaging with additional imaging capabilities, giving our sonographers flexibility when carrying out different types of appointments.
With the clinic operating five days a week, the ultrasound system is used regularly across a wide range of pregnancy scans. The technology allows our sonographers to select and adjust the imaging settings according to the appointment and the views they are assessing.
Throughout your scan, your sonographer will work with the available imaging functions and make adjustments where appropriate to obtain clear views of your baby. The images captured can vary depending on your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and movement, and the views that are possible on the day.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan
Whether you’re looking for an early view of your pregnancy or hoping to see more of your baby later on, our Edinburgh clinic has a variety of private ultrasound appointments available throughout pregnancy. Options include early pregnancy scans, reassurance scans, gender scans and enhanced imaging appointments featuring 3D, 4D and HD Live technology.
The suitable timing and details differ between appointments, so each scan has its own recommended stage of pregnancy and inclusions. Take a look through the available options below to find out what each scan involves, when you can book and what you can expect during your appointment.
Early Pregnancy Scans
An early pregnancy scan offers a chance to see how your pregnancy is developing at the start of your journey. During the appointment, your sonographer may be able to assess where the pregnancy is located, look for cardiac activity and check whether more than one embryo is visible.
The approach used for the ultrasound depends on how far your pregnancy has progressed and the images that can be obtained. At an earlier stage, a transvaginal scan may provide clearer views, while an abdominal ultrasound may be appropriate as the pregnancy develops.
Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.
An Extra Look at Your Baby
If you would like to see your baby between your routine maternity appointments, a private reassurance scan provides an opportunity for an additional ultrasound. Your sonographer will carry out checks appropriate to your stage of pregnancy, which may include looking for cardiac activity and taking measurements where possible.
A reassurance scan is an optional private appointment and does not replace your NHS maternity care. Your usual NHS scans, midwife appointments and other recommended pregnancy checks should continue as planned alongside any private scans.
See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.
Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex
Available from 16 weeks, this appointment gives you the opportunity to see your baby while also attempting to determine their sex. Your sonographer will carry out checks appropriate to your stage of pregnancy and assess the views available during the scan.
You’ll receive digital 2D images electronically following your appointment. Please note that identifying your baby’s sex depends on obtaining a clear view, which can be affected by factors such as your baby’s position and movement. For this reason, sex identification cannot be guaranteed.

Enhanced HD Live Gender Scan
Combine finding out your baby’s sex with a closer look at their developing features using HD Live ultrasound imaging. This enhanced technology can provide more detailed views during your appointment, giving you another way to see your baby before birth.
The images obtained can vary depending on your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and movement, and the views available on the day. As with all ultrasound imaging, specific views or image quality cannot be guaranteed.
View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.
Monitoring Growth in Later Pregnancy
A growth scan provides an opportunity to assess your baby’s development as your pregnancy progresses. Your sonographer will take measurements of your baby to help estimate their size and weight, alongside checking their heartbeat and the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding them.
These measurements and observations provide an indication of your baby’s size and wellbeing at the time of the appointment.

See More of Your Baby with Enhanced Imaging
Our 3D, 4D and HD Live scans offer different ways to view your baby’s developing features during pregnancy. 3D imaging creates still images, while 4D and HD Live ultrasound can capture your baby in motion, providing a more detailed view during the appointment.
What you receive will depend on the scan you book and may include digital photographs, video clips or both. The images obtained can differ between appointments, as your baby’s position, movement, stage of pregnancy and the available viewing angles can all influence what can be seen.
Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.
Finding Out Your Baby’s Position
A presentation scan provides a view of how your baby is positioned in the womb during the later stages of pregnancy. Your sonographer can identify whether your baby is positioned head down, bottom down or lying sideways across the womb.
The scan provides a record of your baby’s presentation at the time of your appointment. You can share this information with your midwife or maternity team if you wish, who can advise you on what it means for your ongoing care.
Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
Went for a few scans here, the service is always very pleasant and they always try to ensure you are seen on time. My little one was born last week and everything from the gender to the average ultrasound age was bang on/HM
We had a great experience, from the moment we arrived we were welcomed, felt relaxed and had great communication with both ladies. They respected our wishes to not see our gender and we cannot wait to come back for a more detailed scan. Highly recommend.KM
Highly recommend!! Had such a lovely experience getting my gender reveal scan at baby scanning in Newton Mearns. Lots of time was taken to go through everything as they were doing my scan, it was a nice relaxed environment and I felt totally at ease.RG
