Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

From early pregnancy reassurance to finding out your baby’s sex and capturing detailed views of their features and movements later in pregnancy, we offer a range of private scans to suit different stages of your journey. Each scan is designed for a specific stage of pregnancy and includes different features and options. Explore our individual scan guides for full details on what’s included, when each appointment is recommended and which option may be right for you.

Early Pregnancy Appointments

An early pregnancy scan can assess the location of the pregnancy, check for cardiac activity and identify whether more than one embryo is present. The findings will depend on the stage of pregnancy, with the scan performed abdominally or transvaginally depending on what is appropriate at the time of your appointment.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments

A reassurance scan allows you to see your baby while checking their heartbeat and taking measurements appropriate to your stage of pregnancy. It provides an opportunity for additional reassurance alongside your routine maternity care and is not intended to replace your NHS appointments.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex

Available from 16 weeks, our gender scan includes a wellbeing check and 2D images sent directly to you by email. During the appointment, your sonographer will attempt to identify your baby’s sex, depending on the views available at the time. Your baby’s position can affect visibility, so identification cannot be guaranteed.

Explore our Gender Scan appointments.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment

An HD Live gender appointment combines an attempt to identify your baby’s sex with the opportunity to capture enhanced images of their developing features. The views and level of detail available will depend on factors such as your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and the conditions during your appointment.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Measurements Later in Pregnancy

A growth scan uses ultrasound measurements to assess your baby’s growth and provide estimates of their size and weight. The appointment also includes checks of their heartbeat and amniotic fluid, providing a snapshot of your baby’s measurements and wellbeing at the time of the scan.

Find out more about our Growth Scan service.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D

Our 3D, 4D and HD Live scans provide enhanced views of your baby’s developing features and movements, giving you the opportunity to capture special images during pregnancy. Depending on the scan you choose, your appointment may include still images, video clips or a combination of both.

The views and images captured can vary from one appointment to another and will depend on factors such as your baby’s position, gestational age and the conditions at the time of your scan.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Checking Your Baby’s Position

A presentation scan provides a check of your baby’s position during the later stages of pregnancy, including whether they are lying head down, bottom down or sideways. The appointment gives you a record of how your baby is positioned at that particular point in pregnancy, which can be shared with your midwife or maternity team if required.

Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
