At our Aberdeen clinic, we use the GE Voluson S8 ultrasound system, a 2022 model selected to support our sonographers in delivering detailed imaging across a range of private pregnancy scans.

The technology behind your ultrasound plays an important part in the images that can be obtained during an appointment. Our Aberdeen clinic is open five days a week and sees a high volume of patients, so we use a system that combines capable imaging technology with the reliability needed for regular day-to-day scanning.

The GE Voluson S8 features high-resolution imaging and a variety of tools designed to assist with ultrasound examinations. This enables our sonographers to work efficiently and obtain clear, detailed views during your appointment, while supporting a consistent approach across different types of scan.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

We provide private scanning appointments to support a variety of reasons for booking throughout pregnancy. Early appointments can offer an opportunity for reassurance, while later scans can focus on finding out your baby’s sex or seeing their developing features and movements. Each scan has its own recommended timeframe and inclusions, which are outlined in the relevant guide.

Early Pregnancy Appointments

In the early stages of pregnancy, an ultrasound can be used to check the pregnancy’s location, look for cardiac activity and establish whether more than one embryo is visible. Your stage of pregnancy will influence what can be seen during the appointment, and your sonographer will determine whether an abdominal or transvaginal scan is appropriate.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments

Our reassurance appointments provide an opportunity to see your baby and have their heartbeat and measurements checked according to how far along you are. They can offer an additional appointment alongside the care and scans provided through your usual maternity pathway.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex

A gender scan from 16 weeks combines an attempt to determine your baby’s sex with a wellbeing check. Your sonographer will look at the images available during the appointment to see whether the sex can be identified, before sending your 2D images to you by email. Because your baby’s position can influence the views obtained, identification cannot be guaranteed.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment

This scan combines an attempt to determine your baby’s sex with enhanced HD Live images of their developing features. The detail and views available will vary according to your stage of pregnancy and how your baby is positioned during the appointment.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Measurements Later in Pregnancy

Using ultrasound measurements, a growth scan can provide an estimate of your baby’s size and weight. Your appointment will also include checks of their heartbeat and amniotic fluid, helping to assess their growth and wellbeing on the day.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D

Our scans give you the chance to see more of your baby’s developing appearance before birth, with 3D, 4D and HD Live options available. Depending on your chosen scan, you can receive a selection of still images, video clips or both. The images achievable can vary according to how your baby is positioned at the time.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Checking Your Baby’s Position

As you approach the later stages of pregnancy, a presentation scan can show how your baby is positioned, including whether they are head down, bottom down or lying sideways. The result reflects their position on the day of your appointment, and any further advice about your care should come from your maternity team.

Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
