Our Edinburgh clinic is equipped with the GE Voluson S8, a 2022 ultrasound system used for a variety of private pregnancy scans. Alongside standard 2D imaging, it offers a selection of imaging functions that can be used according to the type of appointment and the stage of pregnancy.

As the clinic welcomes patients five days a week, the system is used across a broad range of appointments. Our sonographers can adapt the ultrasound settings throughout each scan depending on the areas being examined and the views available.

The images obtained during an ultrasound can differ between appointments. Your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and movement, and the angle from which they can be viewed can all affect what is visible. Our sonographers will make appropriate adjustments to the equipment during your appointment to help obtain clear images of your baby.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

Our Edinburgh clinic offers private ultrasound scans at different stages of pregnancy, including early, reassurance, gender and enhanced 3D, 4D and HD Live scans. Each appointment has its own recommended timeframe and inclusions. Explore the options below to see what’s available, when you can book and what each scan involves.

Early Pregnancy Scans

An early scan provides an opportunity to check on the pregnancy during its initial stages and see the developing embryo. Depending on what can be visualised, your sonographer may assess the position of the pregnancy, check for a heartbeat and determine whether more than one embryo can be seen.

The type of ultrasound used will depend on how early in pregnancy you are and which approach is most suitable for obtaining clear images. A transvaginal scan may be used in very early pregnancy, while an abdominal scan may be suitable at later stages.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

An Extra Look at Your Baby

A reassurance scan gives you an extra opportunity to see your baby between routine maternity appointments. Your sonographer will carry out checks appropriate to your stage of pregnancy, which may include checking cardiac activity and taking measurements where possible.

This private appointment is intended to complement, not replace, your NHS maternity care and routine pregnancy checks.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex

From 16 weeks, this appointment allows you to see your baby while giving you the opportunity to find out their sex. Your sonographer will perform checks suited to your stage of pregnancy and attempt to obtain a clear view for sex identification.

You’ll receive digital 2D images after your scan. As your baby’s position and movement can affect visibility, we cannot guarantee that their sex will be identifiable during the appointment.

Explore our Gender Scan appointments.

Enhanced HD Live Gender Scan

Find out your baby’s sex while enjoying enhanced views of their developing features with HD Live ultrasound imaging. The detail captured can vary depending on your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and movement, so specific views or image quality cannot be guaranteed.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Growth Scan

A growth scan checks your baby’s development later in pregnancy. Your sonographer will take measurements to estimate their size and weight, while also checking their heartbeat and amniotic fluid levels. These checks give an indication of your baby’s size and wellbeing at the time of the scan.

Find out more about our Growth Scan service.

3D, 4D and HD Live Scans

See your baby’s features and movements with our enhanced ultrasound options. 3D provides still images, while 4D and HD Live can show movement in greater detail.

Depending on your scan, you may receive digital photos, videos or both. Images can vary based on your baby’s position, movement and stage of pregnancy.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Checking Your Baby’s Position

A presentation scan checks how your baby is lying in the womb during later pregnancy, including whether they are head down, bottom down or lying sideways.

The scan records their position on the day of your appointment, which you can discuss with your midwife or maternity team if needed.

Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
