At BabyScanning Edinburgh, we use the GE Voluson S8 ultrasound system, a 2022 model designed to provide detailed imaging across a range of private pregnancy scans.

The ultrasound equipment used during an appointment plays an important role in the images that can be obtained. With our Edinburgh clinic operating five days a week and welcoming a high volume of patients, we use a system that is well suited to a busy scanning environment while providing our sonographers with advanced imaging capabilities.

The GE Voluson S8 combines high-quality imaging with a range of ultrasound functions, supporting our sonographers in obtaining clear and detailed views throughout your appointment. Its capabilities allow the system to be used across different types of pregnancy scans, helping us provide consistent imaging for our patients.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

Our private pregnancy scans are available throughout different stages of pregnancy, whether you’re looking for an early check, want to find out your baby’s sex or would like to see more detailed images of their developing features and movements.

Each scan has its own recommended timeframe and includes different checks, imaging options and features. Browse the individual scan guides below to see what each appointment involves, when it can be booked and which option may be suitable for what you’re looking to see.

Early Pregnancy Appointments

An early pregnancy scan can be used to check where the pregnancy is located, look for cardiac activity and establish whether more than one embryo is visible. What can be assessed and the views obtained will vary depending on how far your pregnancy has progressed. Based on your stage of pregnancy and the views required, the appointment may be carried out using an abdominal or transvaginal ultrasound.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments

A reassurance scan allows you to see your baby while your sonographer carries out checks appropriate to your stage of pregnancy. This includes checking for a heartbeat and taking relevant measurements where appropriate. The appointment is intended as an additional private scan alongside your routine NHS maternity care and does not replace your NHS scans or appointments.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex

From 16 weeks, our gender scan combines identifying your baby’s sex with a wellbeing check and 2D ultrasound images, which are emailed to you following your appointment. Your sonographer will use the views available during the scan to try to determine your baby’s sex. As your baby’s position can affect the visibility of the relevant area, it may not always be possible to obtain a clear enough view to determine their sex.

Explore our Gender Scan appointments.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment

Our HD Live gender scan combines identifying your baby’s sex with enhanced HD Live imaging of their developing features. Alongside the gender check, the appointment allows you to see more detailed images of your baby during the scan. The level of detail captured can vary depending on factors such as your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and how they are positioned during the appointment.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Measurements Later in Pregnancy

During a growth scan, your baby is measured using ultrasound to help determine their size and provide an estimated weight. The appointment also looks at their heartbeat and the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding them. Together, these checks give you a picture of your baby’s measurements and wellbeing at the time of the appointment.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D

Our 3D, 4D and HD Live appointments allow you to view your baby’s features and movements using different forms of enhanced ultrasound imaging. Depending on the appointment selected, you may take home photographs, video clips or both, giving you something to look back on from your pregnancy. The images obtained during your scan can vary, as factors including your baby’s position and stage of pregnancy can influence the views available.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Checking Your Baby’s Position

Later in pregnancy, a presentation scan identifies how your baby is lying within the womb. The appointment can show whether they are positioned head first, bottom first or across the womb. You’ll receive information about their position on the day of the scan, which can be passed on to your maternity team where appropriate.
