At our Aberdeen clinic, we use the GE Voluson S8, a 2022 ultrasound system that provides our sonographers with a range of imaging tools for private pregnancy scans. The system is designed to support detailed imaging while allowing appointments to be carried out efficiently.

The equipment used during an ultrasound contributes to the clarity and level of detail that can be achieved during a scan. As our Aberdeen clinic operates five days a week and sees a high volume of patients, our sonographers use technology that is well suited to a busy scanning environment and regular clinical use.

With high-resolution imaging and a variety of advanced ultrasound functions, the GE Voluson S8 helps our team obtain clear views during different types of appointments. Its capabilities can be used throughout pregnancy, supporting our sonographers in capturing detailed images while maintaining a consistent approach across scans.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

Our range of private pregnancy scans covers different stages of pregnancy, from early appointments through to later scans offering enhanced views of your baby’s developing features. Each scan has its own recommended timeframe and inclusions, so you can browse the individual guides to find out what happens during the appointment and when it is available.

Early Pregnancy Appointments

An early pregnancy scan allows your sonographer to assess the pregnancy and check key features that may be visible at this stage. This can include confirming the pregnancy’s location, checking for cardiac activity and identifying whether more than one embryo is present. What can be seen will depend on how far along you are, and the scan may be performed abdominally or transvaginally depending on the stage of pregnancy and the views required.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments

A reassurance scan gives you the chance to see your baby and have checks carried out that are appropriate for your stage of pregnancy. Your sonographer can check for a heartbeat and take relevant measurements during the appointment. This private scan can be booked as an additional appointment alongside the routine care and scans provided by your maternity team.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex

From 16 weeks, our gender scan combines identifying your baby’s sex with a wellbeing check during the appointment. Your sonographer will assess the ultrasound views available and try to determine your baby’s sex, with 2D images sent to you by email following the scan. As your baby’s position can affect the views obtained, we cannot guarantee that their sex will be identifiable on the day.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment

This appointment combines an attempt to identify your baby’s sex with HD Live imaging, giving you the opportunity to see enhanced views of their developing features. Your sonographer will assess the images available and try to determine your baby’s sex, while the quality and detail of the images captured will depend on your stage of pregnancy and your baby’s position during the scan.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Measurements Later in Pregnancy

A growth scan uses ultrasound measurements to estimate your baby’s size and weight at the time of your appointment. Your sonographer will also check your baby’s heartbeat and assess the amniotic fluid. These checks provide an overview of your baby’s growth and wellbeing at that particular stage of pregnancy.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D

Our 3D, 4D and HD Live scans let you enjoy enhanced views of your baby’s developing features and movements during pregnancy. Depending on the appointment you choose, you may receive photographs, video footage or both to keep as a lasting record of your scan. The images obtained can vary from one appointment to another, with factors such as your baby’s position influencing the views available on the day.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Checking Your Baby’s Position

A presentation scan checks how your baby is positioned in the womb during the later stages of pregnancy. Your sonographer will identify whether your baby is head down, bottom down or lying across the womb, providing a record of their position at the time of the appointment. If you have any questions about the position or what it may mean for your pregnancy, your maternity team can provide further advice.
