Our Edinburgh clinic is equipped with a GE Voluson S8 ultrasound system, a 2022 model used across our range of private pregnancy scans. It provides standard 2D imaging alongside additional imaging features that can be used according to the type of appointment and stage of pregnancy.

During each scan, our sonographers can adjust the equipment and settings to suit the examination and the views available. The system is used across the clinic’s five-day opening schedule and supports a variety of pregnancy appointments.

The images captured during an ultrasound can vary from one scan to another. Your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and movement, and the viewing angle can all influence what is visible. Our sonographers make adjustments throughout the appointment to help obtain the clearest images possible.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

Whether you’re looking for an early pregnancy check, some extra reassurance, gender identification or enhanced images of your baby, our Edinburgh clinic has private scan appointments available for different stages of pregnancy.

Each appointment has its own recommended booking window and what’s included. Take a look through the scans below to find the right option for you and learn more about what to expect from your visit.

Early Pregnancy Scans

An early pregnancy scan provides an initial look at your pregnancy. Where possible, your sonographer may check its location, cardiac activity and whether more than one embryo is visible.

The type of scan used will depend on how far along you are, with transvaginal or abdominal imaging used where appropriate.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

Reassurance Scan

A reassurance scan gives you an additional look at your baby between routine maternity appointments. Your sonographer will carry out checks appropriate to your stage of pregnancy, which may include assessing cardiac activity and taking measurements where possible.

This private scan is designed to complement your NHS maternity care and does not replace routine antenatal appointments.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Gender Scan

From 16 weeks, you can book a gender scan to see your baby and find out their sex. Your sonographer will complete checks suitable for your stage of pregnancy and try to obtain a clear view for identification.

You’ll receive digital 2D images following your appointment. As your baby’s position and movement can affect visibility, we cannot guarantee that their sex will be identifiable.

Explore our Gender Scan appointments.

HD Live Gender Scan

See your baby’s developing features in enhanced detail while finding out their sex with HD Live ultrasound. During the appointment, your sonographer will attempt to identify the sex while capturing enhanced views of your baby.

The views obtained can vary depending on your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and how much they are moving.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Growth Scan

A growth scan can be carried out later in pregnancy to assess your baby’s size and development. Your sonographer will take measurements to estimate their weight and may check their heartbeat and amniotic fluid.

The measurements provide an indication of your baby’s growth and wellbeing at the time of the scan.

Find out more about our Growth Scan service.

3D, 4D and HD Live Scans

Choose from 3D, 4D or HD Live ultrasound to see more of your baby’s features and movements. 3D produces still images, while 4D and HD Live can show your baby moving during the scan.

Depending on the appointment, you may receive photos, video or both. The images captured can vary according to your baby’s position, movement and stage of pregnancy.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Presentation Scan

Later in pregnancy, a presentation scan checks how your baby is positioned in the womb. Your sonographer will assess whether they are head down, bottom down or lying sideways.

The scan records your baby’s position at the time of the appointment, giving you information that can be discussed with your midwife or maternity team if appropriate.

Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
