As a busy clinic open five days a week, having reliable ultrasound technology is an important part of our day-to-day service. Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan
From the first stages of pregnancy through to later appointments, our Edinburgh clinic offers a selection of private ultrasound scans to suit different reasons for booking. You can choose from early pregnancy and reassurance scans, gender appointments, or later scans offering 3D, 4D and HD Live imaging.
Each appointment is tailored to a particular stage of pregnancy and has its own inclusions and booking guidance. Browse the scan options below to see when you can book each one, what the appointment includes and what happens during your visit.
Early Pregnancy Appointments
An early pregnancy ultrasound provides an opportunity to view the developing pregnancy and assess key features at the beginning of your pregnancy journey. The appointment may allow your sonographer to identify the location of the pregnancy, check for cardiac activity and establish whether more than one embryo can be seen.
The type of ultrasound used will depend on your stage of pregnancy and the views that can be obtained. An abdominal scan may be suitable, while a transvaginal ultrasound may be recommended at an earlier stage to help obtain clearer images.
Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.
An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments
A reassurance scan gives you the opportunity to have an additional look at your baby between your routine maternity appointments. During the scan, your sonographer will assess the pregnancy based on how far along you are, which may include checking cardiac activity and taking appropriate measurements where these can be obtained.
This is a private, additional scan and forms no replacement for your NHS maternity care. It is intended to complement, rather than take the place of, your routine NHS scans, checks and appointments.
See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.
Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex
From 16 weeks of pregnancy, you can book this scan for an opportunity to check on your baby while also finding out whether your baby appears to be a boy or girl. Your sonographer will carry out appropriate wellbeing checks during the appointment and will make an attempt to identify the sex of your baby.
Digital 2D images from your scan will be sent to you electronically after your appointment. As your baby’s position can make the relevant area difficult to see, we cannot guarantee that the sex will be identifiable during every scan.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment
Discover your baby’s sex while enjoying a more detailed view of their developing features with HD Live ultrasound technology. The enhanced imaging can provide additional detail during the appointment, although the images and views available will depend on factors such as your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and how they are positioned during the scan.
View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.
Assessing Growth Later in Pregnancy
During a later-pregnancy growth scan, your sonographer takes a series of measurements to assess your baby’s growth and estimate their weight. The appointment can also include checking your baby’s heartbeat and assessing the amount of amniotic fluid around them.
Together, these observations provide a picture of your baby’s growth and wellbeing at the time of the appointment.

A Closer Look with 3D, 4D and HD Live
Our enhanced ultrasound options allow you to see more of your baby’s features and movements during pregnancy. 3D ultrasound produces detailed still images, while 4D and HD Live imaging can provide moving views of your baby during the appointment.
Depending on the scan you choose, you may receive digital photographs, video clips or a combination of both. The views captured can vary from one appointment to another, as factors such as your baby’s position, movement and stage of pregnancy can affect the images available.
Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.
Finding Out Your Baby’s Position
A presentation scan provides a view of how your baby is positioned in the womb during the later stages of pregnancy. Your sonographer can identify whether your baby is positioned head down, bottom down or lying sideways across the womb.
The scan provides a record of your baby’s presentation at the time of your appointment. You can share this information with your midwife or maternity team if you wish, who can advise you on what it means for your ongoing care.
Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
Went for a few scans here, the service is always very pleasant and they always try to ensure you are seen on time. My little one was born last week and everything from the gender to the average ultrasound age was bang on/HM
We had a great experience, from the moment we arrived we were welcomed, felt relaxed and had great communication with both ladies. They respected our wishes to not see our gender and we cannot wait to come back for a more detailed scan. Highly recommend.KM
Highly recommend!! Had such a lovely experience getting my gender reveal scan at baby scanning in Newton Mearns. Lots of time was taken to go through everything as they were doing my scan, it was a nice relaxed environment and I felt totally at ease.RG
