At our Edinburgh clinic, ultrasound appointments are carried out using the GE Voluson S8, a 2022 ultrasound system designed for use across a variety of pregnancy scans. Its imaging capabilities support our sonographers in obtaining clear views throughout different stages of pregnancy.

As a busy clinic operating five days a week, we use equipment that can support regular scanning while providing the imaging functions needed for different appointment types. The GE Voluson S8 combines high-resolution ultrasound with a range of specialist features, helping our sonographers assess the views available and capture detailed images during your scan.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

We offer a range of private pregnancy scans at our Edinburgh clinic, with appointments available at different points throughout your pregnancy. From early pregnancy and reassurance scans to gender appointments and 3D, 4D and HD Live imaging, you can select an option based on the stage of your pregnancy and what you would like from your visit.

The timing, purpose and inclusions vary between scans. Browse the individual options below for more information on when each appointment is recommended, what it involves and what is included afterwards.

Early Pregnancy Appointments

An early pregnancy scan provides an initial look at the pregnancy, including where it is located, whether cardiac activity can be seen and whether more than one embryo is present. The views and information available will vary according to your stage of pregnancy, with the scan performed either abdominally or transvaginally as appropriate.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments

A reassurance scan offers an additional check during pregnancy, giving you the chance to see your baby while your sonographer carries out assessments suitable for your stage of pregnancy. This may include checking the heartbeat and taking relevant measurements where possible. The appointment is intended to complement your NHS maternity care and should not be used as a replacement for routine NHS scans or appointments.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex

Available from 16 weeks, the gender scan combines a check of your baby’s wellbeing and sex. You’ll also receive 2D ultrasound images by email following the appointment. As your baby’s position can affect the view, there may be occasions when their sex cannot be identified with certainty.

Explore our Gender Scan appointments.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment

The HD Live gender scan brings together gender identification with enhanced ultrasound imaging, allowing you to see more detail in your baby’s developing features. The clarity and views captured can differ between appointments, influenced by factors such as how far along you are and your baby’s position on the day.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Measurements Later in Pregnancy

A growth scan involves taking ultrasound measurements to assess your baby’s growth and calculate an estimated weight. Your sonographer will also assess the heartbeat and amniotic fluid, giving you a snapshot of your baby’s size and wellbeing at that stage of pregnancy.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D

See more of your baby’s developing features and movements with our range of 3D, 4D and HD Live ultrasound scans. Depending on the appointment you choose, your scan may include photographs, video clips or both. The views and level of detail available can differ from one scan to another, influenced by factors such as your stage of pregnancy and your baby’s position.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Checking Your Baby’s Position

Later in pregnancy, a presentation scan looks at how your baby is positioned within the womb, including whether they are head first, bottom first or lying across the womb. The scan provides a record of their position on the day, which you can share with your maternity team if required.

Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
