Glasgow City and Hamilton
Our Hamilton and Glasgow City clinics are equipped with the GE Voluson E8 Expert, an advanced ultrasound system designed to support high-quality imaging and detailed views throughout your pregnancy. Baby Scanning is proud to be the only baby scanning clinic in Scotland currently using the GE Voluson E8 Expert.
The ultrasound equipment used during your appointment plays an important role in the quality and detail of the images that can be produced. We have invested in advanced ultrasound technology across our clinics, giving our sonographers access to sophisticated imaging systems designed to support clear and detailed views of your baby.
The GE Voluson E8 Expert combines high-resolution 2D ultrasound with advanced imaging technology, supporting detailed assessment and enhanced visualisation during your appointment. Depending on your stage of pregnancy and the type of scan you have booked, the system can be used to capture different views of your baby, including developing features, movements and other visible structures.
For 3D, 4D and HD Live imaging, the technology can create more detailed three-dimensional views of your baby’s features and movements. The images achievable will vary from appointment to appointment, as factors such as your baby’s position, gestational age, movement and the amount of fluid surrounding your baby can all affect the views available.
Our sonographers use the technology alongside their experience and clinical knowledge to obtain the best views possible during your appointment. While advanced ultrasound equipment can support image quality and detail, it cannot guarantee a particular image or view at every scan.

Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan
Our private pregnancy scans offer different ways to see and check on your baby throughout your pregnancy, from early pregnancy scans and reassurance appointments to gender scans and 3D, 4D and HD Live imaging.
Each scan is suited to different stages of pregnancy and includes specific checks, imaging options and features. Explore our individual scan guides below to find out what each appointment involves, when it may be suitable and what you can expect from your visit.
Early Pregnancy Appointments
An early pregnancy scan offers an opportunity to check the location of your pregnancy, look for cardiac activity and establish whether there is more than one embryo. What can be seen during the appointment will depend on how far along your pregnancy is and the views available at the time of the scan. Depending on your stage of pregnancy, the scan may be performed abdominally or transvaginally where appropriate.
Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.
An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments
A reassurance scan allows you to see your baby while providing a check of their heartbeat and measurements appropriate to your stage of pregnancy. It offers an additional opportunity to check on your baby alongside your routine maternity care and NHS appointments, but does not replace them.
See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.
Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex
From 16 weeks, our gender scan includes a wellbeing check and 2D images of your baby, which will be emailed to you after your appointment. During the scan, your sonographer will assess the available views to try to determine your baby’s sex. As your baby’s position can affect what can be seen, a clear view may not always be possible.
Explore our Gender Scan appointments.
Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment
Our HD Live gender scan combines a check of your baby’s sex with HD Live imaging, giving you the opportunity to see their developing features in enhanced detail. The images captured during your appointment will depend on factors such as your stage of pregnancy, your baby’s position and the views available on the day, so the level of detail can vary.
View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.
Measurements Later in Pregnancy
A growth scan uses ultrasound measurements to assess your baby’s development and estimate their size and weight. The appointment also includes checks of your baby’s heartbeat and amniotic fluid, providing a snapshot of your baby’s growth, measurements and wellbeing at the time of your scan.
Find out more about our Growth Scan service.
Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D
Our 3D, 4D and HD Live scans give you the chance to see your baby’s features and movements in enhanced detail, creating special images and memories to treasure before birth. Depending on the scan you choose, your appointment may include still images, video clips or a combination of both. The images captured can vary depending on your baby’s position, stage of pregnancy and the views available during your appointment.
Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.
Checking Your Baby’s Position
A presentation scan provides a check of your baby’s position during the later stages of pregnancy, showing whether they are head down, bottom down or lying sideways. It gives you a snapshot of their position at the time of your appointment, with the information available to discuss and share with your maternity team if required.
Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
Pregnancy Blood Tests at Glasgow City Centre
If you are travelling from Glasgow City Centre for a pregnancy blood test, our Glasgow City Centre clinic offers an Early Gender Blood Test from seven weeks and NIPT Screening from ten weeks.
The early gender test is used to identify your baby’s sex. NIPT assesses the chance of selected chromosomal conditions and is a screening test, not a diagnosis. Visit the relevant service page for eligibility, results information and booking details, and check the clinic location when arranging your appointment.
Private scans are additional to routine maternity care. Continue attending your NHS appointments and contact your maternity team if you have symptoms or concerns.
Went for a few scans here, the service is always very pleasant and they always try to ensure you are seen on time. My little one was born last week and everything from the gender to the average ultrasound age was bang on/HM
We had a great experience, from the moment we arrived we were welcomed, felt relaxed and had great communication with both ladies. They respected our wishes to not see our gender and we cannot wait to come back for a more detailed scan. Highly recommend.KM
Highly recommend!! Had such a lovely experience getting my gender reveal scan at baby scanning in Newton Mearns. Lots of time was taken to go through everything as they were doing my scan, it was a nice relaxed environment and I felt totally at ease.RG
