Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

At different points in pregnancy, you may be looking for different types of scan. Whether you want some additional reassurance, would like to find out your baby’s sex or are hoping to see more of their features and movements, our range of private appointments offers options for various stages. Visit the individual scan guides for full details of each appointment.

Early Pregnancy Appointments

An early scan offers an initial look at your pregnancy, with checks including its location, the presence of a heartbeat and whether there is more than one embryo. The amount of information available can vary depending on how early in the pregnancy you are, and scanning may be performed through the abdomen or transvaginally.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments

During a reassurance scan, you can see your baby while your sonographer carries out checks suited to your stage of pregnancy, including their heartbeat and relevant measurements. The appointment is intended to complement, rather than replace, your scheduled maternity care.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex

If you’re 16 weeks pregnant or further along, you can book a gender scan to see your baby and have their wellbeing checked. During the appointment, your sonographer will assess whether your baby’s sex can be identified from the available views. You’ll also receive 2D images by email, although confirming the sex is not always possible.

Explore our Gender Scan appointments.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment

During an HD Live gender scan, your sonographer will try to identify your baby’s sex while using HD Live technology to capture closer views of their developing appearance. The views achieved can differ from one appointment to another depending on your baby’s position and the stage of your pregnancy.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Measurements Later in Pregnancy

A growth scan provides an assessment of your baby’s development through ultrasound measurements of their size and estimated weight. Alongside these measurements, your baby’s heartbeat and amniotic fluid are checked to provide an overall snapshot at the time of your appointment.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D

From still photographs to moving images, our 3D, 4D and HD Live scans offer a choice of ways to capture your baby before they are born. What you receive will depend on the scan you book, with some appointments including images, video or both. Your baby’s position can influence the views and level of detail available during the appointment.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Checking Your Baby’s Position

A presentation appointment is designed to identify your baby’s position towards the end of pregnancy. Your sonographer will check whether they are head down, bottom down or lying sideways and record the position seen during the scan. Your maternity team can then provide any relevant advice about your care.

Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
