Choosing Your Pregnancy Scan

Whether you’re seeking reassurance in the early stages of pregnancy, looking forward to finding out your baby’s sex, or excited to see more of their features and movements as your pregnancy progresses, we offer a range of private scans to suit different stages.

Each appointment has its own recommended stage of pregnancy, features and inclusions. Take a look at our individual scan guides to learn more about what to expect from each appointment and explore the options available for your stage of pregnancy and what you’d like to see.

Early Pregnancy Appointments

An early pregnancy scan can check the location of the pregnancy, assess for cardiac activity and identify whether more than one embryo is present. What can be seen during the appointment will depend on your stage of pregnancy. Depending on how far along you are and what is appropriate at the time, the scan may be performed abdominally or transvaginally.

Read our Early Pregnancy Scan guide to check the available options and timings.

An Additional Check Between Routine Appointments

A reassurance scan allows you to see your baby while checking their heartbeat and taking measurements appropriate to your stage of pregnancy. It offers an opportunity for additional reassurance alongside your routine maternity care, but is not a replacement for your NHS scans or appointments.

See our Reassurance Scan page for appointment details.

Finding Out Your Baby’s Sex

Available from 16 weeks, our gender scan includes a wellbeing check, with 2D images emailed to you after your appointment. During the scan, your sonographer will try to identify your baby’s sex based on the views available. As your baby’s position can affect visibility, identification may not always be possible.

Explore our Gender Scan appointments.

Adding HD Live Imaging to Your Gender Appointment

A HD Live gender appointment combines an attempt to identify your baby’s sex with the chance to capture enhanced images of their developing features. The views and level of detail available can vary depending on factors such as your stage of pregnancy and your baby’s position at the time of your appointment.

View the HD Live Gender Scan package for timings and inclusions.

Measurements Later in Pregnancy

A growth scan uses ultrasound measurements to monitor your baby’s growth and estimate their size and weight. During the appointment, your baby’s heartbeat and amniotic fluid are also assessed, providing a snapshot of their growth, measurements and wellbeing at the time of the scan.

Find out more about our Growth Scan service.

Seeing Your Baby in 3D and 4D

If you’re looking to capture memorable images of your baby before birth, our 3D, 4D and HD Live scans provide different ways to see their developing features and movements. Depending on the appointment you choose, you may receive still images, video clips or a combination of both. The views and level of detail captured can vary depending on factors such as your baby’s position and stage of pregnancy.

Compare our 3D Scan Picture Package, 4D / HD Live Scan Package and Interactive 4D / HD Live Scan Package.

Checking Your Baby’s Position

A presentation scan checks your baby’s position during the later stages of pregnancy, including whether they are head down, bottom down or lying sideways. It provides a snapshot of your baby’s position at the time of your appointment, which can be shared with your maternity team if needed.

Read the Presentation Scan guide for booking information.
